Acerola FAQ

Product Information

What is Acerola Powder?
Acerola has long been valued by indigenous populations across the Caribbean, Central, and South America, where it was traditionally consumed as a fresh food. Indigenous peoples recognize its high vitamin C and antioxidant content and use the fruit to prepare infusions, teas, and tinctures. In contemporary usage, acerola continues to be popular not only as a dietary staple—enjoyed fresh, as a juice or powdered ingredient—but also as a natural source of vitamin C, since a significant amount of this vital nutrient is now made synthetically in laboratories.

Why is Acerola Powder Healthy?
Acerola powder offers a range of health benefits thanks to its rich nutritional content. Here’s why it’s an excellent choice for daily nutrition:

  • High source of vitamin C
  • Contains carotenoids, polyphenols
  • Supports optimum cellular function for immunity
  • Promotes collagen synthesis for skin and joint health
  • Source of prebiotics for a healthy microbiome

What Allergies or Medications Interactions are Associated with Acerola?
Allergies: Evidence shows that individuals with latex allergies may also react to acerola due to cross-reactivity between specific acerola proteins and latex allergens.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: While generally considered safe, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider before use (see above on latex allergies).

Medication Interactions:

  • Chemotherapy and Antiretroviral Medications: Acerola is incredibly high in vitamin C, and its elevated levels may alter the absorption or metabolism of certain chemotherapy drugs, antiretrovirals, or medications sensitive to changes in urinary pH since ascorbic acid can acidify the urine.
  • Anticoagulants and Statins: Additionally, because vitamin C can influence the excretion of some medicines, individuals taking drugs with a narrow therapeutic index (such as certain anticoagulants or statins) should use caution.

How Does Acerola Powder Differ from Synthetic Forms of Vitamin C?
Acerola is an incredibly rich natural source of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), containing between 1,000 to 4,500 mg per 100 grams. That’s about 50 to 100 times more vitamin C than in oranges or lemons.
Synthetic vitamin C is typically produced as isolated ascorbic acid without the additional bioactive compounds found in acerola, which may affect its overall bioavailability. In addition to high levels of ascorbic acid, acerola powder contains a variety of phytonutrients—such as carotenoids, polyphenols, and other antioxidants—that work synergistically to protect against oxidative stress and support immune function and collagen synthesis. Consequently, while both forms provide vitamin C, acerola powder’s whole-food matrix may offer more comprehensive health benefits than its synthetic counterpart.

What does Acerola Taste Like?
Bright, tangy flavor: Balances tartness and subtle sweetness.
Compared to a tangy cherry: Similar to the intense punch of a cherry-flavored candy with a refreshing, slightly astringent finish.

How can Acerola Be Used?
Acerola powder is very versatile for culinary use. It prevents fruits like apples and pears from oxidizing. It can be added to drinks and smoothies and adds a sharp tang to fruit salads, salad dressings, and marinades.

  • Smoothies
  • Drinks
  • Fruit salads
  • Salad dressings
  • Marinades
  • Healthy desserts

How Much Acerola is a Serving Size?
A little goes a long way. The human body can more easily absorb Vitamin C in lower doses of 200mg or about ¾ teaspoon of powdered acerola. If you consume a larger dose in one sitting, the body will absorb half or less. This is called a saturation point, meaning that although you could ingest more, the body limits how much is absorbed at once. Therefore, dividing your consumption into multiple smaller servings throughout the day is best to maximize absorption.

Does Acerola Powder Need to Be Refrigerated?
No, acerola powder doesn’t need to be refrigerated. It should be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Always seal the container tightly to prevent moisture absorption and maintain its freshness. Acerola powder can lose its Vitamin C nutritional value, flavor, and color over time.

“I have eczema and I get it all over and even on my face. I can use this oil on my face and it doesn’t affect my skin other than make it softer and much less irritated. I use it on dry patches on my body and they go away in days instead of weeks or months. The fact that this is a natural product makes me so happy. I am no longer using 3 to 5 different lotions. As I only need 1 now. Again, thank you so much.”
