Carqueja (Baccharis trimera) is a perennial shrub native to South America, particularly prevalent in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Traditionally, indigenous communities have utilized Carqueja for liver and digestive support. The plant is deeply rooted in South American cultures, where it’s often consumed as a tea or infusion.

Why Is Carqueja healthy?

  • Liver Support: Aids the body’s natural detoxification processes in healthy people.
  • Digestive Aid: Enhances digestion and alleviates gastrointestinal discomfort.
  • Antioxidant Activity: Rich in flavonoids to reduce risk of oxidative stress, inflammation and cellular damage.
  • Metabolic Health: Bioactive constituents support the body’s natural regulation of carbohydrate and fat metabolism.

  • Anticoagulants: Potential interaction with blood thinners like warfarin, increasing bleeding risk.

What Does Carqueja Taste Like?

  • Bitter: A pronounced bitter flavor, characteristic of many medicinal herbs.
  • Earthy: An earthy undertone, reflecting its natural, plant-based origin.
  • Herbal: A strong herbal taste, often described as robust and intense.

How to Use Carqueja?

Carqueja is primarily used as herbal tea. To prepare, dissolve the powder in hot water for several minutes. It can also be incorporated into herbal blends or used as a bittering agent in specific culinary applications, such as liqueurs or bitters.

How Much is a Serving Size?

A typical serving involves steeping 1 to 2 grams or ½ to 1 teaspoon of dried Carqueja in 8 ounces of hot water.

“I have eczema and I get it all over and even on my face. I can use this oil on my face and it doesn’t affect my skin other than make it softer and much less irritated. I use it on dry patches on my body and they go away in days instead of weeks or months. The fact that this is a natural product makes me so happy. I am no longer using 3 to 5 different lotions. As I only need 1 now. Again, thank you so much.”
