Catuaba FAQ

Product Information

What is Catuaba Powder?

Catuaba powder, derived from the bark of trees like Trichilia catigua, holds a significant place in Brazilian traditional medicine. Indigenous tribes have long utilized it as a natural remedy to enhance vitality, alleviate fatigue, and support cognitive function. The bark is rich in healthful bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins associated with antioxidants and supporting the body’s natural defenses against oxidative stress in the central nervous system and brain.

Why Is Catuaba Healthy?

  • Bioactive Compounds: Alkaloids such as catuabine A, B, C, flavonoids, and tannins.
  • Mental Clarity: Supports normal healthy cognitive function and focus.
  • Healthy Sleep, Mood: Adaptogenic properties support emotional well-being and sleep.
  • Energy and Vitality: Aids in reducing the risk of fatigue.
  • Sexual Health: Supports performance.

What Allergies or Medications Interactions are Associated with Catuaba?

There is limited information on specific allergies or medication interactions related to catuaba powder. It’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before use, especially if you are taking medications or have underlying health conditions, as stated below:

Pregnant and Breastfeeding: Limited information exists on the safety of Catuaba during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. It’s advisable not to use it and to consult a healthcare provider.

    • Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
    • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
  • Stimulant Medications: Given its stimulating effects, catuaba might amplify the effects of stimulant medications.
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications could lead to increased heart rate, blood pressure, or nervousness.
  • Blood Pressure Medications: Potential to affect cardiovascular function suggests it may interact with antihypertensive drugs to either potentiate or diminish the effects of medications, leading to undesirable fluctuations in blood pressure levels. Patients on such medications should exercise caution and seek medical advice before incorporating catuaba into their regimen.
  • Sedatives and CNS Depressants: Catuaba may interact with central nervous system (CNS) depressants, such as benzodiazepines or barbiturates, and this interaction is not well understood. Combining these substances could result in unpredictable effects on CNS activity. Therefore, concurrent use should be approached with caution.

What Does Catuaba Taste Like?

  • Mildly Bitter: Earthy undertones.
  • Woody Flavor: Similar to bark-based teas
  • Slightly Sweet: when prepared as a tea.

  • Teas and Infusions: Steeped in hot water to create a traditional herbal tea.
  • Smoothies: Blended with fruits and other superfoods for an energy-boosting drink.
  • Baked Goods: Added to recipes for cookies or energy bars to infuse them with their unique flavor.

How Much is a Serving Size?

A typical serving size of catuaba powder ranges from ½ to 1 teaspoon (1 to 2 grams). It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate amount for your individual needs.

Does Catuaba Need to Be Refrigerated?

“I have eczema and I get it all over and even on my face. I can use this oil on my face and it doesn’t affect my skin other than make it softer and much less irritated. I use it on dry patches on my body and they go away in days instead of weeks or months. The fact that this is a natural product makes me so happy. I am no longer using 3 to 5 different lotions. As I only need 1 now. Again, thank you so much.”
