Coconut Water

Product Information

What is Coconut Water?

Coconut water, the clear liquid inside young green coconuts, has been consumed for centuries in tropical regions for its hydrating properties and nutritional benefits. Historically, it has served as a natural beverage to replenish fluids and electrolytes lost through physical activity or heat exposure.

Coconut water powder is created by freeze-drying coconut water to preserve nutrients and extend shelf life. This powdered form retains the essential electrolytes in fresh coconut water, including potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus. Additionally, it contains B-complex vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pyridoxine, and folates.

Why Is Coconut Water Healthy?

  • Electrolytes: Potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus support rapid hydration by replenishing essential minerals lost during physical activity.
  • Potassium: Supports normal blood pressure levels in healthy individuals.
  • Magnesium: Contributes to muscle function and may aid in reducing muscle cramps.
  • Calcium: Essential for bone health and supports proper nerve function.
  • B-complex Vitamins: Assists in energy metabolism and supports overall cellular function.
  • Digestion: Soothing properties for digestive discomfort

What Allergies or Medication Interactions are Associated with Coconut Water?

  • Allergies: Coconut allergy is relatively rare compared to other food allergies. A coconut is classified as the seed of a fruit, not a nut. The proteins that cause allergic reactions in tree nuts differ from those in coconuts, so most people who cannot consume nuts can tolerate coconut. However, please consult with a physician about any concerns.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Unless allergies are known and there are concerns about consuming liquids high in potassium, coconut water consumption is beneficial during pregnancy and breastfeeding for its hydrating properties.
  • Medication Interactions: Coconut water is high in potassium, which can interact with certain medications:
  • ACE Inhibitors (e.g., Lisinopril): May increase the risk of hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels).
  • Potassium-sparing Diuretics: Medications like Spironolactone can lead to dangerously high potassium levels when combined with high-potassium foods.
  • Beta-blockers: Drugs like Atenolol may raise potassium levels in the blood.

What Does Coconut Water Taste Like?

  • Lightly Sweet: Offers a subtle sweetness reminiscent of fresh coconut water.
  • Nutty Undertones: Provides a mild, nutty flavor characteristic of coconuts.
  • Refreshing Finish: Delivers a clean and crisp taste, making it a pleasant beverage choice.

How to Use Coconut Water?

  • Smoothies and Shakes: For natural sweetness and electrolytes.
  • Baked Goods: Incorporate into batters for muffins or pancakes for a tropical twist.
  • Soups and Stews: Use as a base to infuse dishes with subtle coconut flavor.
  • Rehydration Drinks: Mix with water and natural sweeteners for homemade sports drinks.

How Much is a Serving Size?

A typical serving size is approximately 1 tablespoon (about 10 grams) of coconut water powder mixed with 8–12 ounces of water.

Does Coconut Water Powder Need to Be Refrigerated?

It does not require refrigeration. Store it in a cool, dark, and dry place, sealed in an airtight container. Refrigeration can extend its shelf life up to 24 months.

“I have eczema and I get it all over and even on my face. I can use this oil on my face and it doesn’t affect my skin other than make it softer and much less irritated. I use it on dry patches on my body and they go away in days instead of weeks or months. The fact that this is a natural product makes me so happy. I am no longer using 3 to 5 different lotions. As I only need 1 now. Again, thank you so much.”
